Foreword
This book presents a holistic overview of Chinas economic and business system. It comprises 12 chapters covering Chinas state-owned enterprise reforms, private sector development, market access for foreign investment, human resources and marketing strategies, intellectual property protection and technology transfer, financial system, tax regimes, social security, regional development, green growth, and opening up practices.
The book is primarily based on the lecture notes for the course on Chinas economic and business system at University of International Business and Economics. For over two decades, I have taught this course to international graduate students. In 2019, my colleague, Zhao Jing, joined me in delivering this course. When preparing the teaching materials, we found that there were few English books that introduced Chinas economic and business system in a thorough, impartial, and up-to-date way. However, Chinas economic and business system is broad, complex, and constantly changing. It is imperative to integrate and consolidate all the available information to gain a comprehensive understanding. More importantly, Chinas modernization possesses unique characteristics. It is by no means a mere copy of Western experience, and numerous phenomena in China cannot be accounted for by Western theories. Consequently, when analyzing Chinas economic and business system from a Western perspective, the existing literature often reveals biases or prejudices. Moreover, China is one of the fastest global reformers, necessitating the continuous updates of the latest developments.
Therefore, we decided to write this book, providing key facts, policy overviews, and relevant discussions and analyses from both historical and current perspectives, and covering various fields in Chinas economic and business system. The book reviews a large number of policy documents and research literature, and compiles data from multiple sources including international organizations, National Bureau of Statistics of China, and commercial databases. We strive to provide a wide-ranging, insightful, and unbiased introduction to Chinas economic and business system.
We initiated the writing in 2020 and have refined the manuscript over four years. The content has been persistently updated to reflect the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of Chinas development. We thank the editors at Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press for their support. We hope the book will help international students, foreign entrepreneurs, and global professionals, to better understand Chinas economic and business system.
